2011 NADA Conference Welcomed Robert Whitaker

At this year’s conference in Kansas City on May 20-21, NADA met award-winning investigative journalist Robert Whitaker, who emerged in 2010 as a leading critic of the drug-based psychiatric health care paradigm.  His keynote address, History, Science, and the Need for Alternative Forms of Psychiatric Care, was Friday morning, May 20.

Robert Whitaker has won numerous awards as a journalist covering medicine and science, including the George Polk Award for Medical Writing and a National Association for Science Writers’ Award for best magazine article. In 1998, he co-wrote a series on psychiatric research for the Boston Globe that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

At the NADA conference, Whitaker presented his research on iatrogenic mental illness, disability rates and the use of psychiatric medication. Other panelists included psychiatric clinicians who discussed the use of NADA methods to assist clients in tapering off of psychiatric medication in 2 breakout sessions on Friday, the Limits of Pharmaceuticals and the Far Greater Reach of Human Effort and NADA: An Alternative to Medication—Breaking Free From Medication Based Psychiatric Care.
