This policy applies to all Mental Health and Addiction Program staff who are NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) certified Acupuncture Detoxification Specialists and who will be involved in the care of a patient at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) Mental Health and Addiction Program. “The scope of conditions that non-acupuncturist ADSes may treat is limited to those that are related to addictions and behavioral health treatment, including
detoxification, withdrawal, trauma, cravings, stress syndromes, relapse prevention, rehabilitation and recovery maintenance. This may include persons with co-existing chronic mental illness, HIV/AIDS, PTSD or persons at risk for substance abuse or misuse
RVH recognizes that auricular acupuncture has become widely used in North America as a simple, complimentary addiction and behavioural health intervention.
It is effective across a range of addictive substance and throughout the treatment/recovery process. It is reliable in improving treatment outcomes, is cost effective and has few complications or adverse reactions.
This policy contains information regarding auricular acupuncture for the complimentary treatment of addiction and behavioural health. It has been designed as a resource and reference for staff and managers in the Mental Health and Addiction Program.
